One Dress, Four Ways

I am all about shopping my closet and reworking items to create more outfits.  I've learned that having more items doesn't mean more outfits.  Working with what I already have has been a fun challenge for me and I love coming up with new ways to wear things.

Take this basic brown dress.  I've simply added different layers, scarves and boots to create four completely unique looks.  Even one simple change can create a different look.  A chambray shirt, a denim jacket and a sweater are basic items already in my closet to add diversity.

DIY Infinity Scarf From Pajama Pants


Several weeks ago my sister cut off the bottom of her pajama pants because they were too long.  She asked me if I wanted the scrap fabric . . . heck yeah!!  I love the black and white pinstripes so I decided to make an infinity scarf out of it.  Crazy, I know, but I am all about refashioning things and creating new out of what I already have.

This is what it started out as.  Two lonely chopped off pant legs.


I first had to cut off the hem because I was going to join both ends.


I put one leg inside the other, right sides together and pinned.  I sewed about a 1/2 inch seam all the way around.


Next, I opened the tube so it was right side out.  Keeping it right side out, I folded the tube in half and pinned the inside two pieces together.  This is where it gets a little tricky to explain, but just sew around until you can't sew anymore.  (This will make sense when you're doing it.)


I was left with an opening that I hand stitched closed.


I threw on your my scarf and smiled proudly!  I made an infinity scarf that cost me nothing!  Thanks, sissy!!  What else do you have that I can refashion?  {wink!}

Limited Edition Makeup By One Direction

My two daughters are in middle school, so of course they want to wear makeup.  They've started wearing a little bit here and there, so when I had the opportunity to collaborate with Markwins and their three new Limited Edition ONE DIRECTION Makeup Kits, I said YES!

First, they tried the  ELECTRO GLAM MASCARA kit.  This kit comes with three colors of mascara for hair and lashes, in the following colors:
 
Story Of My Life - amped canary yellow 
Why Don’t We Go There? - shock of blue
Does He Know? - pinkest hot pink


The colors were bold and fun and the mascara was very buildable.  The mascara was soft on their lashes and washed off easily, which I was grateful for.  They loved trying out the three colors for different looks!  This mascara can also be applied to small sections of your hair by swiping the brush through for instant highlights! 


Next, they tried the LIQUILIGHTS GLOW GLOSS kit.  This kit is a set of three UV reactive color-changing lip glosses.  They sparkle during the day and illuminate under UV black light after dark!  How fun is that?!  Unfortunately, we didn't have a black light to demonstrate but I know my girls would love to try that out!  This lip gloss kit comes in the following three colors:

Kiss You - orange glitter rush lip gloss that glows to neon yellow under UV light
Taken - powerhouse glitter pink lip gloss that glows to neon orange under UV light
Through the Dark - electric glitter poppy lip gloss that glows to neon red-orange under UV light


The glosses offered a nice hint of color and was very soft on their lips, because they are enriched with natural oils and vitamin E for hydration.  The colors were fun and sparkly!


The ROCK ME NAIL KIT came with three colors of neon UV reactive nail varnish and three UV reactive glitter toppings.  You can wear the nail varnish alone, sprinkle the glitter over wet polish for a subtle accent, or dip your entire wet nails in the glitter for major sparkle!

The nail varnish comes in these colors:
Happily – UV iced blue
Moments - UV neon pink
Diana - UV 3D holographic

The glitter toppings are:
Kicks - UV snow cone blue glitter
Not Afraid - UV electrified pink glitter
Star - UV holo glitter 


The nail varnish went on smoothly and evenly and was easy for them to use.  The little pots of glitter added extra sparkle!  To cover the whole nail we sprinkled the glitter over wet polish, and to create the French Tip, my daughters dipped the tip of their wet nail directly in the glitter pot.  They tried a variety of ways because they are so into having an accent nail!


My girls had so much fun trying these makeup kits!  I loved watching them have fun, plus I got a kick out of all the names of the colors.  The holidays are right around the corner, and these Limited Edition Makeup Kits would make a great gift for that tween or teen girl on your list!

The day I wore this it actually warmed up enough that I didn't have to wear a sweater, but I'm still all about layers!  I wore two shades of purple with my cami and long sleeve tee and added this denim jacket.

My youngest daughter talked me into buying these little sneakers last spring and I really haven't worn them much, so I chose to wear them with this outfit.  They are kind of a blue/grey color and are actually quite comfy to wear.  She smiled when she saw me wearing them.  Pretty casual look for a Friday!

A Beautiful Gift From My Mom - Italian Murano Glass Necklace and Earrings

My mom recently took a 2-week trip to Europe and she brought me back this Italian Murano Glass necklace and earring set.  I absolutely LOVE the intricate design and all of the vibrant colors.  She explained the process in which they make this glass, and I'm truly amazed by it.  (You can read a little bit about it here.)

I couldn't wait to wear it!  I wanted the jewelry to be the focal point of my outfit, so I chose a blue cami to bring out the blue colors, a black cardigan opened at the neckline, and bootcut jeans.  I could also easily have dressed this up with pants or a dress.  I can't wait to try wearing it other ways!  Thanks mom!

Winter Coats I'm Currently Loving

Now that the colder temperatures have arrived, it's time to break out the winter coat!  My current coat is a few years old, so I've had my eye on these.  I love the faux fur ones, the parka types, and the puffer styles.  I wish I could have them all!  There are so many colors, textures, and patterns to choose from!

For those of you in warmer climates, consider yourself lucky that you don't have to bundle up this winter.  Please send some warmth this way! :)  I dread the winter coat, scarf, hat, mittens and snow boots!  Here in Iowa we get a lot of snow and freezing temperatures so I have no choice to bundle up.

Everyday Outfits - Light Aqua and Leopard


I have  to laugh!  When I was trying to take these pictures, one of our cats kept photo bombing me.  I kept clicking "delete" on my camera for the shots she appeared in, and then I finally gave up!  This cat loves me.  I mean really loves me!  Her name is Marie, but we call her the "Stalker" because she has to be wherever I am.

Last week I met one of my dearest friends for tea.  She's one of those friends you love to talk with but it always seems to be in passing or quick texts here and there.  With our busy families, it's hard to find time to get together.  We finally got together and chatted for two hours straight, and believe me, I could have chatted longer! It was so good to catch up with such a wonderful friend!  She is truly a blessing to me and my family!

This sweater used to be a crew neck, but one day on a whim I decided to make it into a cardigan.  Unfortunately, I don't have a tutorial for it but it was very easy.  I just cut up the center of the sweater and finished the edges with some fabric scrap I had that just happened to be the perfect color!

With the black jeans I thought the leopard print belt and shoes added a little pizzazz to an otherwise boring outfit, along with the long necklace.

Everyday Outfits - Black, Grey and Polka Dot Tights

As I'm trying to wear all the clothes in my closet, I realized I hadn't worn this skirt yet.  It used to be a knit dress, but I cut it off and made it into a skirt, which is something I'll wear more.  I paired it with a black turtleneck sweater, polka dot tights and mid-calf boots.  I needed a little something around the neck, so I threw on this paper bead necklace that I made this summer.  It adds just a touch of color!

On a funny note, as I was writing this post I was drinking my coffee.  I was down to the last few sips and then got a mouthful of coffee grounds!  Icky!  I guess I didn't notice my coffee filter must have slipped or something when I poured it.  Will definitely be watching for that again!

DIY T-shirt Scarf


I recently made this t-shirt scarf and I wanted to share it with you because it is super easy!  You can use any new or old t-shirt.  Husband's old t-shirts work great for this!

This started out as an adult size small t-shirt.  The larger the t-shirt size, the longer the scarf.


I cut the bottom off close to the armpit.


Next, cut the hem off the bottom, just along the stitching.


Fold your t-shirt tube in half and leave about 1 1/2" to 2" as shown here.


On the folded edge, cut up and through the first fold, but not the second fold. This will help all your loops stay together.  Cut your strips about and inch in width, and cut all the way across. (Please ignore the cat hair.  No matter how much I vacuum, it's always there.)


Take each loop that you cut and pull so the edges curl.  You need to do each strip individually.  This is what it should look like when each strip is pulled.


Here is a close-up.


Ta da!  Now you have a t-shirt scarf!  Shown here it is looped around my daughter's neck twice, but you could also just let it hang.  With a larger t-shirt it may be able to wrap around multiple times.  Just play around with it until you get a look that you like.  Here my oldest daughter is modeling it.


While I was at it, I made these two also.



Go find a t-shirt and make one!  It's very easy and the possibilities are endless.  You'll be glad you did!
