Everyday Outfits - Navy Blue and A Statement Necklace

necklace, made by me (tutorial here)

Earlier this week it warmed up a bit, but still chilly enough to wear layers.  I layered a long sleeved tee over a button up and opted for a statement necklace instead of a scarf.  I'm wearing boot-cut jeans, which meant I needed to add heels.  For some reason I feel better in heels with boot-cut jeans...it seems to even out the look.

I actually made this statement necklace and earrings over the summer and wear them all the time!  I wasn't sure if the shades of blue would go with much in my closet, but turns out it does.  After seeing how the blue one turned out I made this yellow one.  I love wearing them both!  They add just a pop of color.

Everyday Outfits - A Pop Of Pink

A few weekends ago our daughters were away for the weekend on a Youth Group retreat, so my husband and I decided to take a day trip and see the beautiful fall foliage.  My husband knew of a great overlook spot not too far away and it was breathtaking.  Look at these gorgeous colors!

There is just something about being in the countryside, surrounded by God's beauty...from the vibrantly colored trees, to the humble farms, and all the amazing fields.  You can see for miles!

We had lunch in a tiny town -- nothing fancy, but delicious food and great service.  It was a nice and relaxing day, with perfect fall weather!  I love dates with my hubby!

Everyday Outfits - Black, Tan and Leopard Shoes

I hope you all had a great weekend!  Mine was pretty uneventful, but that's okay every once in a while.

I don't think you can ever go wrong with black and tan together!  I've had this sweater for a couple of years, but always wore it as an open cardigan and was getting tired of it.  It was about to get put in the donation pile, when I realized I could just button it up for a different look.  Duh!!  It's a simple look, yet still something that can be worn for an everyday outfit.

I must say this black scarf is so incredibly soft and I love having it snuggled around my neck, especially on these chilly mornings.  The leopard flats are quickly becoming one of my favorite pair of shoes!  They go with anything and everything and they are amazingly comfortable.

Copycat Orange Julius Recipe

Happy Friday!  Here is a recipe for you to try over the weekend...

Sometimes we like to have breakfast for dinner on busy weeknights, and along with whatever we're having I like to add some type of fruit...pancakes and veggies just don't cut it.  My girls get tired of orange slices, grapes and sliced apples.  I found this recipe online a long time ago and for the life of me I can't find the link!  Sorry.

I like that the bananas add sweetness instead of sugar, and because they are frozen the drink is cold.  I make this in my Vita-Mix, but any blender will do.  It's really thick and frothy and does taste like an Orange Julius!  My girls loved it the first time I made it, so now it's a keeper in the recipe file.  Try it and let me know what you think.

Copycat Orange Julius
About 5 cups

6oz. frozen orange juice concentrate (1/2 of can)
1 peeled banana, frozen
1 1/2c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Add it all to your blender and blend until creamy and frothy!  Enjoy!

Everyday Outfits - Breast Cancer Awareness T-Shirt

Ecco shoes, thrifted (similar, similar)

Here's one more shout out for Breast Cancer Awareness month!  I am a new survivor and realize that breast cancer can affect anyone.  I am so grateful for all the research and technology that help with early detection.  I bought this t-shirt in support of that.  Someone I'll never know gave a shout out for me, so now I'm doing it for the next person!  You can read a little bit about my story here.

Please leave me a comment if you, or someone you know, has been diagnosed with breast cancer.  It's all about awareness!!

Everyday Outfits - Black and Blue

target button-up, thrifted (similar, similar)
 joe fresh jeans
cardigan (similar, similar)
kohl's ankle boots (similar)

Oh my, the temperatures have dropped in the morning!  I had on this button-up with jeans and decided I needed an extra layer, so I added this cropped black cardigan.  Just added a couple of chain necklaces and my black ankle boots and I was out the door for an appointment.  Needless to say it was cooler out than I thought and I was cold all day.  At least the sun was shining!

Button-ups are really my go-to lately because they can be styled so many ways and are great for layering (plus, I have several in my closet) as you can see here.   How do you like to wear them?

One Scarf, Five Ways Part 1

Recently I posted this outfit, and got an enormous response to this scarf!  Infinity scarves are one of my favorite accessories to wear because they are so versatile.  They not only add a pop of color, but can be looped or tied for a variety of looks. These are five ways I'm wearing them now.

1. Straight up!  Just hang around your neck and go!

2. Looped around once and adjusted so it has a cowl-like effect.

3.  Looped around once (as above), but pulled a little tighter around the neck so one loop is smaller than the other.

4. Folded in half and loop one end through the other.

5.  A simple knot on the end.

I've seen many, many other ways to wear infinity scarves, but these are my favorites for now!  How do you wear infinity scarves?  Let me know!  I'd love to hear from you!

Everyday Outfits - Grey Sweater and Boot-cut Jeans

I have been wearing skinny jeans and super skinny jeans all the time lately,  so I decided to break out my boot-cut jeans today!  I used to wear boot-cut jeans all the time but somehow they have made it to the bottom of the pile.  I resurrected them here and realized I still like wearing them, I just need to wear heals.  (For some reason I feel like I look really short in boot-cut jeans.)

I love these particular pair of shoes with boot-cut jeans, but they are not for walking long distances in! :)  I met with my Bible study group this morning over coffee and didn't have to walk too far, so they were a good option.

A Family Day At The Zoo

A few weeks ago we went to a family birthday party in Des Moines.  We had some time to spare before the party so we decided to go visit Blank Park Zoo.  We love to visit zoos, and even though we've been to Des Moines a million times, we've never checked out this zoo.  Let me tell you it is a great zoo!  Lots of animals, it's beautifully landscaped, very clean and family friendly.

This particular day, the weather was supposed to be overcast and in the low 70's, but the sun came out and it ended up being in the mid 80's.  Needless to say, the jeans we wore were not a good option!  (My oldest daughter was the smart one and packed shorts.)  thank goodness for all the shade trees!

Ever been photo bombed by a giraffe?  Actually we wanted this sweet creature in the photo.

Blank Park Zoo has a great variety of animals and we had a wonderful time!

If you ever get to Des Moines, I would highly recommend this zoo.  It won't disappoint!

Although we received free tickets to the zoo, this is not a sponsored post and all opinions are 100% mine.

Today was time for me to break out a sweater and tall boots!  I've had this brown long sleeved t-shirt and sweater for a few years, but keep them around because they are so versatile.  I added an infinity scarf for some added color around my face, a belt, and my new favorite boots and I was ready for a day at my youngest daughter's school.  Casual, yet presentable.

Everyday Outfits - What I Wore to Church and A Busy Day

Before I got out of bed last Sunday, I knew it was going to be a busy day!  It started off with church, then running several errands, and making a meal for friends.  I don't know about you, but when I know I'm going to have a crazy busy day, I have to dress for comfort...and unfortunately, sweats were not an option.

I've had this knit sweater dress for a few years now, but it's so soft and comfortable.  I can dress it up or down with accessories and layers.  Today, I just opted for an animal print infinity scarf, black tights and Mary Jane heels.  It was an incredibly chaotic eventful day, but everything was accomplished and I still had a smile on my face at the end of the day!

Cleaning Out My Closet...Again!

A few weeks ago I was packing for the weekend and trying to decide what to wear.  I wasn't sure what the weather was going to be like, so I had several things out on the bed.  My two daughters came in and offered to help.  Oh boy!  While choosing what to wear, they quickly told me what items they thought were ugly in my closet and that I should get rid of!  Really??!!  Should I even mention that they were overly excited to do this??

So, we went through every article of clothing I own...in the closet and the drawers, as well as shoes and belts, and I mean everything.  The funny thing is, they both agreed on all the things to get rid of!  We laughed and laughed about some of the comments they made about my clothes.  To see things through an 11 and 13 year old's eyes!

My wardrobe was thinned out by at least 1/3!  This may not look like much, but the pile was deep!

Needless to say, I put everything they thought should be donated into a large trash bag.  The next day when they were at school I thought I'd sneak a look in the bag and resurrect some things without them knowing, but I realized they were just clothes and that someone else could use them more than me.  There was nothing in that bag that I had to have back in my closet, and that's a good thing.

Even though I just cleaned out my closet a couple of months ago and got rid of many clothes, it was good to go through it again.  Now I really get to rework my clothing options.  It's all good! :)

Have a wonderful weekend!!

Everyday Outfits - A Little Leopard

scarf, made by me
kohl's ankle boots (similar)

I am loving this slightly cooler weather!  Time to break out the scarves for me!  I really like this infinity scarf because the leopard print goes with almost any color, even though I've worn it with black today.  It makes a boring black t-shirt and jeans a little more lively and chic.

These jeans have also become one of my favorites.  They are super skinny jeans that I got off the clearance rack for next to nothing.  The funny thing about these jeans is, my daughters were with me when I tried them on and because they are extremely tight from the calf area to the ankle, they were a little difficult to get off.  I know they are called super skinny jeans for a reason, but because they are a little long on me and I have to cuff them a few times, it made getting them off quite humorous.  Learn from my mistake...uncuff them before trying to take super skinny jeans off.  My girls still giggle about it when they notice I'm wearing these jeans.  Actually, I laugh about it too!  Oh, to laugh at ourselves...it's a good thing! :)

Quick And Easy Taco Soup

I love soup, and with fall already here, I thought I would share one of my family's favorite.  This is so easy to make and only takes about 25 minutes.  It's healthy and very filling.  Just add a side salad and call it dinner!

Taco Soup
Makes 12 servings, 1 cup each

1 lb. extra lean ground beef (I use lean ground turkey)
1 onion, chopped
3 cans (15 1/2oz. each) mild chili beans, undrained
1 can (14 1/2oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained (I puree mine)
1 can (14 1/2oz.) corn, undrained (I use about 1 cup frozen corn)
1 can (8oz.) tomato sauce
1 pkg. taco seasoning mix
1 1/2 c. water
Shredded cheddar cheese

Brown beef with onions in a large saucepan; drain.  Add all remaining ingredients, except cheese, and stir.  Bring to a boil.  Simmer on medium-low heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Serve topped with cheese.  Enjoy!

If you have favorite soup recipes, please let me know and I will be happy to share!  Just email me your recipe.

Everyday Outfits - Almost Feels Like Fall

I wore this outfit last week when it was a little warmer, but didn't get around to posting it.  On this particular day the weather was a little warm for the season, so I opted for this light yellow button-up over a white cami, with a brown printed skirt and sandals.  An easy breezy outfit for a beautiful sunny day!  The button-up was refashioned here and the skirt was refashioned here.

Now the cold front has arrived, so time to put away my summer things!  Brrrrr....

5 Things I Love About Fall

It's officially FALL!  It actually started last week and I have been thinking about what I really love about this season.  With the cooler temperatures...
  1. Apples - I love apples...all varieties!  There are so many things you can make with apples...apple pie, apple cobbler, chop an apple and mix it in your morning oatmeal, caramel apples.  And then there's cider and cider donuts, baked apples.  My daughter did a post on Apple Oatmeal In An Apple Bowl that is so yummy!
  2. Hot Chocolate - Who doesn't love a warm mug of hot chocolate?  Sprinkle on some cocoa powder, add some whipped cream, a drizzle of caramel and you have a great warm-me-up drink.  From a mix or make your own, there are so many options.
  3. Boots - I am really into boots right now...ankle boots, mid-calf boots, riding boots...you name it.  I've been itching for the weather to cool down so I can wear them without sweating!  Boots can be worn with skirts, dresses, jeans, leggings, pretty much anything!  I have several styles and I plan on getting a lot of wear out of them.
  4. Scarves - I really like to wear scarves!  I'm one of those people that gets cold when it's below 75 degrees, so I've really learned to wear scarves.  For some reason if my neck is warm, I'm warm.  I have several scarves in varying colors, textures and lengths and I enjoy experimenting with ways to wear them.  They can really add a lot to an outfit!
  5. Denim - From jeans to denim jackets and vests.  Right now skinny and super skinny are my go-to styles of jeans, although I still have some boot-cut jeans that I prefer to wear with a higher heel.  You can never go wrong with a denim jacket and they are good to transition into fall.  There are so many styles and colors out there to fit your style.  Denim vests are also great transitioning pieces.
What are your favorite things about fall?   Food?  Fashion?

Breast Cancer Awareness Month and How I'm Celebrating

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month!!  As many of you know I had breast cancer.  I now can say that I HAD breast cancer, because to me it's gone!

I may be flat-chested (from my bilateral mastectomy in April) and bald (from my four rounds of chemo this summer) and put permanently in menopause (because of an oophorectomy less than two weeks ago, and the Tamoxifen I will take daily for the next 10+ years) but I am ALIVE!  I am so grateful for all that I have!  I feel truly blessed and have chosen to slow down a bit and savor every moment in life.  I worry less about what I look like and how clean my house is when friends come over, and more about how I love and help others.

I hope and pray that none of you are ever diagnosed with cancer.  Life on this earth is very short, so find something good in every day and be grateful for it all.  Hang with friends that build you up and make you feel good about yourself!  Enjoy life, because each day is truly a gift!  Celebrate life!

To show my support and hope for one day finding a cure for breast cancer, every day this month I will be wearing one or both of these pieces of jewelry.  The necklace was made by my sister-in-law, and the bracelet was a gift from my sister.  I will wear them proud this month and always!  See if you can spot them in my posts this month. :)

You can read more about my journey here, here and here.
